Commercial Services Section

The 2006 GMB Congress voted to move to three Industrial Sections:

  • Commercial Services
  • Manufacturing
  • Public Services

The three sections are headed by a national secretary with a number of national officers working from Wimbledon. Within each region each section is headed by a senior organiser who is responsible to the regional secretary and leads a team of GMB organisers, organisation officers and secretarial & support staff.

Commercial Services

Headed up by Graham Benton

The Commercial Services section combines over 163,000 GMB members nationally working in professional and service industries in the private sector. The main industries and employers covered by the section are:

  • The AA
  • Civil Aviation
  • DHL Parcels
  • Electricity, Coal, Gas and Water
  • Gaming
  • Hotel & Catering
  • Private Prisons & Immigration
  • Security inc G4S, GSL, Securitas, Loomis and Security Plus
  • Legal Services inc Thompsons
  • Sports
  • Tourism & Leisure
  • Trade Union & Political Staffs
  • Transport
  • Pub Tenants


Through national and regional negotiations the section is committed to improving pay and conditions as well as maintaining the highest level of representation for its members. This is supported by a comprehensive network of shop stewards together with assistance from full time officers based across the Yorkshire & North Derbyshire region who are all committed to the GMB@Work agenda. Recent and current examples of the campaigns being undertaken on behalf of members include:

  • Against employment abuse by private equity organisations, including the AA
  • Security industry licensing
  • Attacks on members working in the cash and valuables in transit (CVIT) sector
  • GMB recognition at ASDA
  • Properly funded gas industry
  • Trade union rights and recognition at DHL
  • Future of the water industry

The Commercial Services section will continue to promote a well trained and properly rewarded workforce in all the industries covered by the section.
