Class of 2012 & 2013

Class of 2012 League Table

A new initiative has been introduced as part of all workplace organisers induction training.  The following exercise has been devised to assist all new workplace organisers to help develop their skills so they can build GMB through organising and recruiting in their workplace.

2 Day GMB Induction – Organising & Recruitment Exercise

New reps complete a 2 day GMB@Work course and a 2 day induction.  The emphasis of both courses is to enforce the GMB@Work initiative in relation to building the GMB.

This exercise requires reps to attempt to recruit new GMB members.  Reps are issued with 5 membership application forms, and the target is to recruit 5 new members by the completion of the 5 day Industrial Relations training course which is spread over a time-scale of 5 weeks.

The tutor encourages the reps to bring a completed membership form on each day of the course.  All completed forms are then returned to the education department on a weekly basis.  The groups total number of members recruited are then recorded.

A matrix has been developed to record each groups achievements.

Your tutor and elected team leader will encourage you to forward all newly recruited members to the regional education department utilising your relevant training code as a way of identifying the member to your team on a week by week basis.

The education department will then process the forms to finance and record the groups’ total numbers of members on the regional website class of 2012 league table.  Course tutors of your follow on training will also encourage you to continue this activity throughout your induction.  On line members will also be accept as long as you provide their names and workplaces.

Building GMB in the Workplace

Periodically the matrix will be updated to reflect the ongoing organising and recruitment of each group measured within the set time-scale.  The intention being to use the education and training vehicle as a means to build union density.

The Outcome

The group responsible for organising and recruiting the most members within the time limits will be asked to send a small delegation to the region’s annual branch event in November of each year.  Also the whole group will be invited to attend a corporate event later in the year. This will be organised through the team leader nominated and elected for each group.

Commenting on this new initiative Tim Roache, regional secretary, said: “I am delighted to endorse this fantastic initiative that encourages our new activists to think about organising and recruiting new members right from the off.  This will undoubtedly become a prestigious award to win as the competition will be fierce amongst our new, keen and eager activists.  This is a fantastic way to introduce gentle competition and at the same time our reps, members and the region all benefiting.”

Good luck to you all!
