Severn Trent Water

Due to the large geographical area of Severn Trent Water,  most GMB members are from the Birmingham & West Midlands Region or the Midlands & East Coast Region.  However, we have nearly 100 members who belong to Yorkshire & North Derbyshire Region.

Most members are based at Bamford, Buxton, Worksop, Ogston, Homesford, Hady and Derby. We are engaged in water treatment, distribution and sewage treatment with lesser numbers in administration and management. We are all part of Chesterfield Number 1 Branch.  Our full-time officer is Sue Boyd from the Chesterfield Office. We have two shop stewards who can be contacted as follows:

Pay Claim 2012
After careful consideration of all appropriate data, indices, company performance and directors’ rewards, GMB shop stewards submitted a joint pay claim of 5.2% to the employer, which was set-out in document running to several pages.  After negotiations, the employer has made a “final” offer of a 2% consolidated rise in base pay, plus various unconsolidated bonus elements dependant upon company performance.

One of these is a Share Incentive Plan, which the employer has a expressed as a cash amount if the shares are sold at a particular market value.

Shop stewards are concerned that this could amount to financial advice to sell and are warning members that they are not, by publicising the offer, making any recommendation to sell or otherwise.  Shop stewards are aware of recent pay awards at other UK water companies:

Anglian 3%; Welsh 3.2%; Northumbria £700 consolidated plus 1 day extra holiday; Veolia 3.4%; Yorkshire 5.2%.

November’s RPI figure has traditionally been used in our pay negotiations and last November’s was 5.2%. Indeed, over the last 3 years, our pay rises have lagged inflation by almost 50%.

Noting all the above, shop stewards are recommending that members vote “NO” at the consultative postal ballot which is currently being held.
