GMB, Britain’s General Union, which represents more than 300,000 women across the UK will be hosting a conference in Leeds this Saturday (11th March 2017) as part of the Celebration of International Women’s Day.
More than 60 delegates will meet at the Marriott Hotel in Leeds for what will be GMB’s second annual Women’s Conference to be hosted in the city. Guest speakers include Labour Party MPs Tracy Brabin and Paula Sherriff , Jayne Senior who exposed the child sex abuse scandal in Rotherham, Councillor Maureen Cummings from Wakefield Council and Pauline Snaith from Women Against State Pension Inequality.
The conference theme will be a celebration of inspirational women through the decades and will put the spot-light on social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The conference will also call to action the acceleration of gender parity.
Desiree Wilburn, GMB’s Senior Organiser, who will be heading up the conference, said: GMB has been at the forefront in the fight for equality within workplaces and society since Eleanor Marx carried a motion at the second conference of the union in 1891 in Dublin demanding equal pay for work of equal value for men and women. Carrying on the work of Eleanor Marx is as important now as it has ever been. GMB will continue to campaign until true gender parity is achieved.”
