JO COX CHARITY RUN: GMB TO SPONSOR EVENT IN HONOUR OF MURDERED MP

The Run for Jo is a fantastic way to remember Jo Cox and everything that she stood for says GMB Union

GMB Union has been unveiled as headline sponsor for the 2019 Run for Jo, in memory of Jo Cox – the Batley and Spen MP who was murdered in her constituency in 2016.

The Run for Jo, now in its third year, will be held on Sunday, 23rd June 2019, at Oakwell Hall and Country Park in Birstall.
It will be one of the key events of The Great Get Together which will be taking place over the same weekend.

More than 500 runners took part in the 6.5k challenge and 2.5k fun run last year on what was one of the hottest days of the summer, with hundreds more coming along to enjoy a family fun-day.

Up to 1,000 are expected this year as participants are joined on the start-line by the likes of TV’s Harry Gration and Christine Talbot.

Neil Derrick, GMB Regional Secretary for Yorkshire & North Derbyshire region, said: “We are so pleased to be the headline sponsor for the second year in a row.  The Run for Jo is a fantastic community event and such a fitting way to remember Jo Cox and everything that she stood for.  “Jo was a GMB member and a GMB sponsored MP, and that’s something we are very proud of.”

Kim Leadbeater, Chair of More In Common and sister of Jo Cox, said: “I am delighted that GMB has agreed to sponsor this year’s Run for Jo. The local events that we organise through our More in Common group of volunteers could not go ahead without support such as theirs. I would like to say a huge thank you to them on behalf of Jo’s family and I look forward to seeing their fantastic team of volunteers on the day.”

The 2019 event will follow the same format as previous years with a 6.5km cross-country challenge and 2.5km fun run but there will be more focus on music and entertainment this year giving it a festival vibe, with lots of live performances from local talent and up and coming acts.
