Changes from April 2012

Employment Rights

From 6th April anyone starting new employment has to work 2 years to qualify to claim unfair dismissal and request written reasons for dismissal. Please note the qualifying period for these rights remains 12 months for anyone who started employment before 6 April 2012.

Employment Tribunals

*judges can sit alone in unfair dismissal cases
*witness statements taken as read unless an order is made by a judge or tribunal otherwise
*maximum deposits for weak claims increased to £2000 from £1000
*maximum costs that can be ordered by the tribunal increased to £20000 from £10000
*a party can be ordered to pay witnesses’ expenses

Benefit Rates from 1st April 2012

*Statutory Sick Pay increased to £85.85pw from £81.60pw
*Statutory Maternity, Paternity and Adoption Pay and Maternity Allowance increased to £135.45pw from £128.73pw
