GMB member David Ball meets Prime Minister Gordon Brown

17 Jun 2009

Sheffield licensee, David Ball,  together with representatives from the Fair Pint campaign group met the PM at the GMB’s annual Congress in Blackpool on the 16th June 2009, to voice their concerns about the tied trade.
Publicans working in the tied trade are obliged to buy their stock from the Pubco’s who fleece them and so their customers.  By compelling licensees to buy drinks from them for up to 80p a pint higher than the wholesale price, although this is passed on to the customer, the money goes to the Pubco’s who use it to pay off their huge debts.

David Ball commented: “I am very pleased that Gordon Brown has invited a group to No 10 Downing Street to discuss further the BEC report which recommends an Office of Fair Trading investigation.  I am also more than happy he has asked us to submit evidence of abusive practices.

An inaugural meeting of licensees will be held at The Wetherby, Park Hill, Swallownest, S26 4UN on Monday, 22nd June 2009 starting at 7.00pm.
