GMB Tribute to Len Hancock

1 Feb 2011

GMB are sad to announce that former ASBSBSW and GMB full time officer Len Hancock passed away on 28th January 2011 aged 90.

Len had been a member of the GMB and it’s predecessors all his working life. He began work around 1934 in the Spring Shop at the English Steel Corporation, Sheffield, and joined the Blacksmiths Society at an early age. He quickly became a shop steward and was eventually elected a full time officer in the early 1950’s. He was on the executive committee of the Blacksmiths when they became the Amalgamated Society of Boilermakers, Shipwrights, Blacksmiths and Structural Workers and this in turn eventually merged with the GMWU.

At that time he was based in the Tyneside office although he continued to live in Sheffield. He retired in 1985 but has maintained his strong links with the GMB. He is survived by 3 children, 6 grand-children and 5 great grand-children.

Len’s funeral will be at Grenoside Crematorium, Skew Hill Lane, Sheffield, S35 8RZ on Thursday, 10th February 2011 at 10.15am. Donations to St Luke’s Hospice would be welcomed in lieu of flowers please. Click here for St Luke’s
