Pipers Lead Protest Against Cuts

14 Feb 2011

Hundreds of people, including many GMB members, were led by six pipers as they marched through the centre of Halifax on Saturday in protest against the Government’s spending cuts.  Several trade unions and people affected by the cuts came together under the banner of Northern Towns Against the Cuts. The procession made its way from Halifax Town Hall to the Piece Hall, where speakers addressed the crowd.

Labour MP, Linda Riordan, told the crowd: “It’s time to say enough is enough and to start the fight back.  We need to send out the message loud and clear that people across our district will not tolerate the job losses, the cuts and the attacks on our community any longer.”

GMB regional secretary, Tim Roache, said: “There is no need for these cuts. The government is adding 1.5 million people to the total of 2.5 million who are already unemployed.  We are saying the government should start investing in peoples’ jobs, cutting more is just not the answer.”
