Regional Branch of the Year Awards 2011

21 Nov 2011

At last year’s Branch Activity Weekend a new initiative was launched in order to pay recognition to the outstanding work carried out by branches in this region.

The first award for ‘Community Campaign of the Year’ was won by Chesterfield No 1 Branch for the huge number of community campaigns which they had been involved in and organised throughout the year. Central to many of their activities has been to highlight the effect that government cuts are having on local communities.  The award was picked up by David Wallace from the branch.

The second award for ‘Outstanding Achievement in GMB@Work’ went to Rotherham General Branch for their well thought-out and executed organising plans based around the central aim of making GMB the most visible and accessible union for all Rotherham council employees.  On the back of their campaigns 235 new members joined GMB.  The award was picked up by Eric Batty, Amanda Horsman and Lee Simpson from the branch.

Tribute was also paid to runners up, Barnsley GMB, Keighley & Airedale and Leeds Civic Branches.

One final award was presented to Alison Morrell, who took part in the Class of 2011 initiative that began in January 2011.  The initiative, introduced as part of the workplace organisers induction training, is an exercise devised to assist new workplace organisers to help develop their skills so they can build GMB through organising and recruiting in their workplace.  In total 6 teams compted.  Alison, as team leader, and her group managed to recruit the most members during that period.

All the awards were presented to the recipients by Paul Kenny, GMB General Secretary.
