Remploy to face possible axe

18 Oct 2010

The Government has circulated the list of Quangos to be axed or merged.  192 Quangos will be scrapped and a further 118 are under consideration including Remploy.

We object to Remploy being called a Quango as Remploy provides decent sustainable employment for disabled people.  The problem with Remploy is how it is run.  There are too many bosses; not enough workers and too much waste by the management.

We have already met with the new Minister and more recently senior DWP Officials and presented proposals which will save Remploy a considerable amount of money without the need to close factory sites.

Once again disabled people are under attack and you will need to protect yourself.

What you can do:

  • Make sure everyone in your workplace is a member of GMB, Unite or Community
  • Make sure that our Convenor, Les Woodward has your shop steward contact list
  • Keep your members up to date, we will be posting regular updates on our websites
  • Visit your MP and local councillor (we will provide a briefing by the end of next week)
  • Do not accept the arguments you are going to get from highly paid managers who will leave with vast amounts money and then find another job.

“WE ARE TOLD THAT NO DECISION HAS YET BEEN TAKEN BUT THE VERY FACT THAT REMPLOY IS UNDER CONSIDERATION MEANS WE HAVE TO ACT NOW”

The trade unions are better prepared to defend your job than ever before but you need to become actively involved.
