GMB And Unison To Add £50,000 To Hardship Fund As Strike In Leeds Heads Into 6th Week 8 Oct 2009
Paul Kenny GMB General Secretary, while on the picket lines in Leeds this morning, announced that GMB and Unison were between them adding £50,000 to the strike hardship fund as the line up for the benefit gig in Leeds was made public.

GMB today announced that they will hold a benefit gig and rally at the O2 Academy in Leeds on the 18th October 2009 to support the 600 striking cleaning workers who are about to enter their 5th week of strike.

Councillor Brett Decides To Stay Away From Leeds City Council On Holiday During Strike 28 Sep 2009
GMB has learned that Councillor Brett, leader of Leeds City Council has decided to remain on the South Coast on holidays after being away from Leeds attending the Liberal Party Conference in Bournemouth during the whole third week of the street cleansing workers’ strike in the city. While in Bournemouth he confirmed to the press that council leaders were “more seriously considering the very thing that the strikers say they don’t want – the outsourcing of the service, the privatising of the service.” This cuts across a statement put out yesterday by Cllr James Monaghan, executive board member for environmental service, said: “The council has never been intent on privatising the refuse collection service.”

Refuse Workers’ Face Up To A Third Reduction In Pay 14 Sep 2009
Leeds City Council has announced that it intends to cut the wages of refuse workers by one third – on average from £18,000 to just £13,000 a year.
