GMB Wins £55,000 Compensation For 21 Polish Workers In Selby

30 Nov 2009

The workers were employed at the company as welders and operators. These workers joined GMB because they were concerned about health and safety issues. A number of workers were called into a meeting at a few minutes notice and told they must leave as they have been made redundant without any reasonable procedures. Regional Organiser, Steve Huckerby telephoned the company and informed them that the GMB will be taking the case to an employment tribunal because no reasonable procedures had taken place.

Six weeks later the company made another group of employees redundant in the same way. Then a few weeks later the company went into insolvency and the rest of the employees were made redundant. The Tribunal awarded compensation because there was no reasonable consultation and a number of members will also receive payment of automatic unfair dismissals because of the company’s unreasonable behavior.

Steve Huckerby, GMB Regional Organiser said, “The employer’s actions were totally reckless and against any reasonable procedures. The company was told their actions were wrong to start with and then they did it again which is unbelievable. This case shows the importance of employees being a member of the GMB in enforcing their rights. The case could not have been taken forward without the support of our GMB project worker Piotr Plonka and Joel Smith from Thompson Solicitor’s.”
