Major Care Home Providers’ Staff Furious At Insulting Proposal On Pay

1 Nov 2010

GMB, the union representing Southern Cross employees, has today started a mass consultation process with their membership which could lead to industrial action being taken against the company.
Jon Smith, GMB Organiser said “Our members in Southern Cross are absolutely furious with what the company are proposing.  At a time when the Chief Executive’s salary is £430 thousand pa with a bonus of £215 thousand on top of this – for that same person to then condemn our members to an hourly pay of £5.93 just doesn’t cut it!

There is a bigger debate to be had here where the people who do the most important job end up being paid the least amount of money.  Our members work tirelessly looking after our elderly relatives and to say that they deserve a living wage in return is a major understatement.  The GMB will be supporting these members in whatever action they wish to take.  We cannot stand by any longer and let this company neglect their staff while the care of this very important generation of our society hangs in the balance”.

The GMB claims that residents are being put at risk as many of the Homes are left chronically understaffed by such low pay forcing a third of Southern Cross staff to leave employment with the company each year.  This is estimated to cost the company approx £18 million a year.

Jon Smith continued: “It is about time that the Southern Cross management realised what the residents already know – the company’s most important asset is its staff who show dedication, commitment and a passion for what they do every day for a pittance – this is wrong and now is the time to change!  The company should be investing in their staff and encouraging employees to make a career with Southern Cross not condemning them to a lifetime of struggle”.

Southern Cross Healthcare want to freeze all pay, only increasing where legally bound in line with the national minimum wage.

The GMB calculates that Executive Directors pay themselves almost 70 times as much as the lowest paid in the company.
