GMB Calls for Positive Discussions with Asda Following Landmark Equal Pay Ruling

Instead of wasting money on litigation, we ask Asda to be a market leader in solving this wide ranging industry problem.

GMB, the union for Asda workers, calls for sensible negotiations with supermarket giant following a landmark equal pay ruling.

Judges at the Employment Appeal Tribunal today said jobs performed in Asda stores are comparable to those in the supermarket’s distribution centre.

Asda store workers are predominantly women, while the better-paid distribution staff are mainly men even though the courts have agreed for the second time that their jobs are of equal value.

The ruling now opens the door for a potential equal pay claim.

Tim Roache, GMB General Secretary, said:

"GMB look forward to Asda management sitting down and finding a sensible negotiated solution to recognising that our women members in stores should be paid and valued as equal to the men.

"Instead of wasting money on litigation, we ask Asda to be a market leader in solving this wide ranging industry problem. "
