Once again, Sheffield City Council has breached the Local Government Pay Agreement and refused to pay both the 2022 and 2023 pay increases to their very lowest paid workers.

Sheffield City Council are committed to following the nationally negotiated and agreed pay structure for all council workers. Despite this they have made a conscious decision not to pay their employed cleaners both the 2022 and 2023 pay rate.

Will Dalton, GMB Organiser, said: 

"It’s shocking that once again the council is refusing to pay their own staff what they are owed.

"These workers, who are overwhelmingly women, are being underpaid on a technicality, leaving them 61p an hour worse off than their colleagues.

"No doubt the people of Sheffield would be appalled that the council have chosen to underpay their lowest paid staff.

"With the council about to elect a new leader GMB call upon all candidates to publicly commit to righting this injustice."

• Sheffield City Council cleaners have been paid £9.90 per hour since April 2022 while the lowest pay point on the councils own Pay Scale is £10.51 per hour.
• Sheffield City Council claim not to be obliged to provide this pay award as these workers TUPE Transferred into the council having previously been outsourced and so the council have CHOSEN not to give this pay award.
• GMB have raised a collective dispute and will move forward to industrial action if this issue is not resolved.
